Abstract
This study was conducted to explain the role of environmental factors in the formation and transformation of personality from the perspective of Islamic sources. Accordingly, by reviewing the Quran and authentic hadith sources and employing a descriptive-analytical method, relevant data were collected, coded, evaluated, analyzed, and interpreted. The findings indicate that according to Islamic sources, air, water, and soil - as the three fundamental environmental elements - constitute intrinsic components of human nature and factors in both the formation and positive/negative transformation of personality. Air has been identified as a factor influencing temperament stability, personality strength, as well as its weakness and stagnation. Water quality has been introduced as a factor in the formation and negative transformation of personality traits such as baseness, treachery, duplicity, rejection, and wretchedness. Soil has been recognized as a factor in personality stability, absence of psychological distress, adaptability/maladjustment, and traits like rigidity and strictness. It appears that most related theories - except for biological determinism - align with the findings of this research. Furthermore, in accordance with Islamic teachings and to prevent the development of abnormal personalities or to facilitate positive personality transformation, migration from unfavorable environmental regions to favorable and moderate ones is recommended.
