The Mediating Role of Emotional Divorce in the Relationship Between Alexithymia and Marital Burnout

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the mediating role of emotional divorce in the relationship between alexithymia and marital burnout. This research was conducted using a descriptive-correlational method. The statistical population consisted of married men and women in 2024; accordingly, 115 couples were selected through convenience sampling and responded to the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, the Emotional Divorce Scale by Gottman and Silver, and Pines’ Marital Burnout Scale. Data were analyzed using linear regression with Baron and Kenny’s approach. The findings revealed that there was a positive and significant relationship between alexithymia and marital burnout, as well as between alexithymia and emotional divorce. Furthermore, a positive and significant relationship was found between emotional divorce and marital burnout. Overall, the results indicated that with an increase in alexithymia, marital burnout rises through the mediating role of emotional divorce. Consequently, emotional divorce plays a partial mediating role in the relationship between alexithymia and marital burnout.
