Introduction: Differentiation of self plays a highly significant role in predicting individuals’ interpersonal problems. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between interpersonal problems and differentiation of self, with the mediating role of emotional creativity in couples.
Method: This study employed a predictive correlational design using structural equation modeling (SEM). The statistical population included all couples referring to psychological and counseling clinics in Mashhad city. The sampling method was convenience sampling. Based on the recommendations of Tabachnick and Fidell (2001), a total sample of 104 participants was calculated. Participants completed three questionnaires: the Differentiation of Self Inventory (Skowron, 1989), the Emotional Creativity Scale (Averill & Thomas-Knowles, 1991), and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (Barkham, 1996).
Results: The findings revealed that differentiation of self significantly predicted individuals’ interpersonal problems (P < 0.05). Furthermore, emotional creativity mediated the relationship between differentiation of self and interpersonal problems (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that couples’ differentiation of self predicts the quality of their interpersonal relationships both directly and indirectly through emotional creativity.
