This study aims to conduct a comparative and systematic analysis of the marital paradigm in Islamic teachings versus Western psychological models, based on the six dimensions of the Willoughby-Hall model. The research method is descriptive-analytical and comparative. Utilizing purposeful qualitative content analysis, this paper codes religious teachings (from the Quran and Sunnah) according to the six dimensions of the Willoughby-Hall model and synthesizes them with Allamah Mesbah Yazdi's model of volitional action to generate a systematic, indigenous framework.
The findings indicate that the Islamic model possesses a comprehensive intellectual system that covers all dimensions of the paradigm. The fundamental difference lies in the epistemological foundation: Western models are centered on individualism and cognition, whereas the Islamic model emphasizes divine teleology and the complex interplay between cognition and inclination (emotions and spiritual dispositions). This systematic framework is explained through the tripartite pyramid of the soul (knowledge, love, and power), which regards marital stability as the product of a conscious and devotional will.
In comparison, the Islamic model elevates commitment from a conditional contract to a "solemn covenant" (mīthāqan ghalīẓan) and prioritizes criteria such as religious and ethical compatibility (kufw) over purely material and superficial factors. This comprehensive approach offers an effective solution for managing the crises of individualism and relativism within the institution of the family.
